Canada’s Two Major Railways Struggle to Keep Up With Grain Shipments in Week 24: Ag Transport Coalition

CN and CPKC Rail supplied a combined 64% of hopper cars ordered in grain week 24, a decline from the 69% order fulfillment performance seen in week 23 and marking a third consecutive week of decline.

That’s according to the Ag Transport Coalition.

In supplying 79% of cars ordered by shippers in week 24, CN performance improved notably from the 61% order fulfillment performance seen the prior week and representing the best week of performance seen from CN in eight weeks.

CN performance remains below the 90% performance threshold for a twenty-sixth straight week.

CPKC performance declined significantly, with the railway supplying only 52% of shipper orders in week 24 as compared to the 77% order fulfillment performance seen the prior week.

This represents CPKC’s worst performance since weeks 3 and 4 in August which was impacted by the brief labour disruption seen at that time.

CPKC performance remains below the 90% performance threshold for an eighth straight week.
