Upward trend of Sask. Cattle Prices continues

Prices for most feeder steers and feeder heifers in Saskatchewan continued to go up.

In the Cattle Market Update for the week ending October 25th, prices for feeder steers ranged from the low end of $309.33 per hundred weight in the 900-plus category, to the high end of $551.13 in the 300-400 pound category. Only the 700-800 hundred and 900-plus pound categories decreased in price week-over-week.

For the heifers, prices ranged from $308.33 in the 800-plus pound category up to $452.32 per hundred weight in the 300-400 pound category. Only the 700-800 hundred pound heifers did not report a week-over-week change in price, while the others had increases.

Canfax reported 44,741 head of feeder cattle marketed last week, above the previous week’s 23,409 head marketed, but below the number of head marketed the same time last year of 48,657.

Canfax also reported prices of Alberta’s live, non-fed cattle reported on October 25 were lower than the prior week. The price of D2 slaughter cows averaged $173.09 per cwt, a decrease of $3.91 per cwt from the previous week. The price of D3 slaughter cows decreased $1.68 per cwt from the prior week to average $162.04 per cwt.

The Canfax price for Alberta fed steers for the week ending October 25 was $240.92 per cwt, a decrease  of 17 cents from the previous week.
